I was 12 years old and lived in Portsmouth. The schools closed. My school was evacuated to the Isle of Wight. My parents didn't want me to go; they thought Germans might invade the island. So I stayed in Portsmouth until I was 14. I didn't go back to school. Bombing was so bad, my mum and I went to the country and my dad came on his bicycle. Dad's shop was bombed, so we moved to Aylesbury. We were surrounded by airfields and prisoner of war camps.

I taught myself to type and got a job in Lloyds Bank at age 14. I earned 拢1.00 a week.
