I was an evacuee on a farm in Montgomeryshire to get away from the heavy bombing of Birmingham I remember clearly June the 6th 1944. When the farmer’s eldest son John visited and excitedly asked “had we heard the news”? “ No! The accumulator is not charged.” Was the reply. Radios in those days had to have a battery (accumulator) charged up regularly or they wouldn’t work. John connected a bicycle lamp battery to the radio and we heard the one o’clock news. That the allies had landed in France (Normandy) D’ Day.
