In the summer of 1943 I took my two baby brothers in their pram down a lane into a field where I and my friends often played. It was a lovely summer day, and as we had not heard air raids in the nearby town for some time, mother said we would be safe.

Enemy planes began to fly over head towards Birmingham and we stated back for home across the field. Suddenly one plan came towards us. He cam down low and opened fire. I saw spurts of bullets landing in the grass near me. I pushed the pram into a hedge. He missed us and flew away, and I went home as fast as I could. One bullet had hit the wheel of the pram and broke the tyre, but we three were safe.
