I was 8 when the war started. I remember going to school on a bus and a “buzz bomb” out ahead. Sometimes they exploded where they were, sometimes floated on. This time it floated on, but it was a terrifying moment.
Another occasion the 1st land was mine dropped. I was standing in the kitchen doing some washing up. Everything shook. I was in Wood side Bank. The mine went off in W. Hendon. 4 miles away such a huge bang. Another night during blitz we stayed near Mill Hill Barracks. Fields in between were used as underground monitoring dumps. Germans tried to bomb these, sometimes the bomb fell very near us — 120 yds from us there was a nearest crater. Fortunately we managed to escape every time!
On VE night we had a big party. There was a bonfire on each green strip, people would made a big circle and sang Auld Lang Syne.
I also remember the lady who made a confectionery across the road. She had an idea of making ice —cream. Ice-cream was not available anywhere else. So to let us know when it was ready, she would stick a little Union Jack in front hedge. All were saying- the flag’s at — the flags out!
