In 1940 when I was 4 and a half I was staying with my Grandmother in Bournemouth. I climbed onto a seat and watched a large plane flying low; when all of a sudden I saw lots of little birds coming out of it . I called to my Grandmother 鈥 Nanny, look at all those birds coming out of that plane鈥 My Grandmother grabbed me and threw me under the table and fell on top of me. I wondered what I had done wrong and never been more terrified of my Grandmother. After what seemed a long time, there was a sudden series of explosions that rattled the windows of the house, but did no damage as the bombs fell about 4 miles away.
