This story has been written onto the people's war site by CSV Story gatherer Jessica on behalf of the author,Janice May, who fully understands the terms and conditions of the site.
My husband, Alan鈥榮, parents were living at Chapel near Newquay. Their house was struck during the war and they were housed in Nissen Huts along with other families at St Mawgan. Living in the hut were his grand parents, parents, and four sisters. Then later, Alan was born. He can remember that it was long and hollow with an earth floor, and it had a fire in the middle of the hut. It was like they used in the old school classrooms for heating. He says that it was always freezing cold because it was so big inside. There were curtains that were used as screens to section off areas for sleeping in. Alan鈥檚 mother, Vi, said he was so tiny that his bed in the hut was a drawer from an old chest of drawers!
