Most poignant part was sailing up from Southampton at 8.00 the night before
D-Day. Got in the Channel and all naval ships and crews were on board, giving us a send-off. We went on and saw porpoises in the Channel, following the ships.

We played cards and when we were called to "get ready", we chucked all the money over the side.

At St Eloise, a village, we left our cycles in a hedge and went off to fight. When we came back, a Sherman tank had run over them all. The sergeant told us, "You'll have to walk - you're in the ground infantry again".
