This is a story of a young boy watching his father returning from battle at Dunkirk. I was five at the time. My father, Thomas Leonard Beattie, was a Lieutenant Quarter Master in the VI Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment.

My father had been fighting near Arras. We were living at Elson, Gosport, Hampshire, opposite Portsmouth Harbour. One summer's day, he just appeared through the door, wearing an old great coat. He'd borrowed it, as he'd been effectively "stripped" in battle, his car destroyed. I looked at him strangely -- I hadn't seen him for a year. I was glad to see him -- I was his only son. Mum, though, was tearful!
