Michael Kingham told his story to Helen Kemp (CSV Volunteer for Thanet Libraries) at the Summerlands Nursing 91热爆 in Westgate-on-Sea, Kent.

I heard the 鈥渟tart of war鈥 announcement when I was in church. When I got home my mum was crying.

My father joined the RAF.

Life continued but as a boy I didn鈥檛 realise how serious things were. I remember going on transport to the cinema and having to stay inside the cinema during an air raid, until the all clear.

I remember being at Croydon Aerodrome with my brother the day German planes came. They were machine gunning all around. We had to run for shelter and then the aerodrome was bombed. There were many killed.

I was on a bus one day when a V2 rocket hit a bridge. We felt the bus shake. There were over 300 killed that day.

Everyone was friendly then and helped each other.
