Nell joined the WRAF in 1944. Unit name 240TU.

"I was stationed at Honeybourne, near Evesham. My job was driving big transport carriers, transporting air crew to the airfield where they were learning to fly Wellington bombers. One crew were all 18 years old, they told me that they were the youngest crew out of Canada. Three days later they were all dead.

"I worked 24-hours shifts, without a break. I was stationed there for four months.

"It was dangerous driving in the dark with no lights on the vehicle. Once I crashed into an airplane that was taxi-ing the wrong way.

"I was also stationed at Daysfield Court, Medmenham, near Henley-on-Thames. I regularly had to drive to Benson to pick up top secret reconnaissance film at 6am and drive it straight to London, escorted by a Special Policeman, to the War Ministry, the Admiralty and the Air Ministry.

They were the happiest days of my life."
