I was a cleaner of train engines. We hated cleaning the Royal Engine in particular but we didn't have to do it that often. It had smokeless fuel and so on. All the coal on the tenders were put on by hand (perhaps so there were no bombs). If it was a troop train we made a fuss of it because we liked all the soldiers. I must have been talking to this English soldier once, because he gave me his stripes and I stitched them on my boiler suit - it caused a lot of comment and questions. It was all just a joke of course.
