Collecting conkers from Upton Park, Slough in 1942, led nearly to the untimely demise of Bob age 11 and brother Clyde age 9
As a damaged german aircraft flew just overhead, Clyde, carrying a large bag of his collection of the choicest conkers, was transfixed, since he could see quite plainly,the enemy rear gunner firing his machine gun, from the perspex turret, as he was preparing to crash land.
Bob, always the responsible elder brother,tried to drag him to the shelter of a large house, nearby.
However, as the bullets rained down on the road ahead, both decided it would probably.... be alright to retrieve at least some of their hard earnt conkers, which by now had spilled all over the road.
After all, any unscrupulous kid. could have come out and pinched them,whilst Clyde and Bob, were sheltering from the gunfire and mayhem.
