When my sister was born in 1940, my three brothers and I had to go in a children's home in Biggleswade for 2 weeks. My father was away in the army and we didn't have anyone to look after us.
I remember later on American soldiers in trucks going along Newnham Avenue in Bedford and they were throwing chewing gum and sweets to us, we were so thrilled as we didn't get many as they were rationed.
We hid under the kitchen table when there was a bombing raid. I also remember my father on the doorstep covered in blood and a bandage on his head. He had just returned from Dunkirk. We all had a street party in Wendover Drive at the end of the war. I remember it well. I was seven.
