This story was submitted to the People's War website by Louise Angell of the CSV Action Desk at 91热爆 Radio Derby on behalf of Patricia Doxey. The author fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

The tanks coming through Matlock Bath used to terrify us - the size, the noise and the guns. We used to see soldiers on horses going between the lorries. I remember one day a horse got spooked by a tank and became uncontrollable. it was really frightening. The man who used to sell watercress to us stepped in and threw his coat over the horses head to try and calm it but not before it had thrown the rider and fallen on him. There was blood everywhere. That's my most frightening memory of the war years.
