At the end of the liberation of Rome, although fighting was still going on in Germany and Northern Italy, I had been given a week's leave at Anzio. We went to Rome and stood by the memorial to the Unknown Warrior, waiting for the parade of British, French and the American troops. The British troops were selected from the Pioneer Corps and they outshone the French and American troops in their marching.

On VE Day I was on compassionate leave because my father was very ill. During my time in Italy and Germany I had collected a lot of memorabilia, which I had left in my kit bag in Germany. Unfortunately I could not go back to collect it because the end of the war was declared.
