Migrant workers 4 - Andrey's story

Strawberry pickers went for days without electricity and water in their camp caravan...

A 20-year-old Russian psychology student who worked at S&A Produce, Brierley Court Farm, near Leominster said strawberry pickers went for days without electricity and water in their camp caravan.

The migrant worker asked 91热爆 Hereford and Worcester not to use his real name, so he's been called Andrey.

Threatened

He said the site was quite a big camp and that the staff can't provide a good enough service.

Some facilities faults were not corrected quickly and he had no working toilet in his caravan for a five day period.

In his first week Andrey was told by managers that he must do better or he would be sent back to Russia.

He said that he did try to work harder but it was not enough, and he was afraid and very nervous.

He said his future was uncertain and that he didn't think it would be like this.

Shortage of fruit

The normal amount of strawberries that was required to be picked by a worker daily was 8kg, however Andrey said this was sometimes difficult because of certain weather conditions.

He also claimed there wasn't enough strawberries in the field and despite this his manager said he must still do it.

Cramped living space

Andrey lived in a caravan with six other people and he said this was a big problem because there was not enough space.

He said two girls slept in a double bed, another on a single bed, and four boys had to sleep on two sofas.

The area available for the boys, Andrey said, was inadequate because of there size, and more often they didn't have enough sleep, but still had to go to work.

S&A Produce statement extract

S&A says about Andrey's allegations about seven workers living in one small caravan:

"We have very few caravans which are suitable for sleeping seven people, the majority sleep four or five. Those caravans that sleep up to eight are designed to accommodate and are used that way in holiday accommodation, for example. Whenever people request a change in their accommodation, these requests are accommodated wherever possible."

In terms of Andrey saying there was not enough strawberries to pick - and how he feared for his job, S&A points out:

"This season we have employed some 3,900 workers, picked 11,000 tonnes of soft fruit using some 22 million punnets as well as 5 million cobs of sweet corn. Over the years we have employed more than 15,000 people and many of those have returned year on year to work for us."
