Under Phil Neal's captaincy Worcestershire enjoyed one of their most successful eras - winning one-day trophies, championships, and attracting big-name players into the county's ranks.

Phil Neale's success as a captain can mask his contribution as a player - he passed a thousand runs eight times in 15 seasons, had a highest score of 167 and an average of just over 36 in first class cricket.

His achievements as a captain are, of course, considerable: the county won the Sunday League in 1987 and 1988 and the County Championship in 1988 and 1989.

He also played football professionally, for both Lincoln City and Scunthorpe United, where he played alongside one IT Botham.

When Beefy fell out with Somerset Phil Neale was in the perfect position to tempt him to New Road, along with Graham Dilly.

His ability to lead a team containing both superstars and journeymen cricketers won him a nomination for Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1989.

A knee injury finally brought his career to an end, since when he's used his evident talents as a leader and motivator to good effect as a coach and manager at county and national levels.
