Award winning brews in the hills

A look behind the scenes at the Malvern Hills Brewery - a small independent brewery producing some award winning real ales in West Malvern.

What first gives away the presence of the Malvern Hills Brewing Company in West Malvern is the distinctive smell.

The building that houses the brewery doesn't look remarkable on the outside - it could be a large garage built from the distinctive grey Malvern stone.

But that unmistakable rich smell of beer being brewed hints that there's something far more interesting inside than a family car.

The building itself has an interesting history - it was once the explosives store for Tank Quarry, that ate away much of one side on North Hill, and caused George Bernard Shaw to get very hot under the collar.

For seven years it has housed Malvern Hills Brewery Company, a small independent producer run by Julian Hawthornthwaite.

Julian was introduced to brewing by a friend and gradually what was initially a hobby has blossomed into a thriving small business.

The brewery currently produces about ten barrels of beer a week, rising to as many as 20 when one of the local beer festivals is on.

At the moment Julian still has a day job, and does his brewing in the evenings and weekends.

He's been on training courses at Sunderland University to help perfect his craft.

He has about 70 regular customers who take his beers, including half a dozen pubs as far away as Cumbria.

The idyllic location in West Malvern (it has truly spectacular views) does have the odd drawback - including wild yeasts floating in off the hills and changing the taste of the beers ( a problem he's now solved.)

Local beers, local names

The names of many of the beers he produces have local connections.

  • Red Earl
  • Moel Bryn (Welsh for Bear Hill)
  • Swedish Nightingale (named after Jenny Lind, the singer who is buried in Malvern.)
  • Worcestershire WHYM ( the acronym stands for Water Hops used to Malt)
  • Priessnitz ( named after Vincent Priessnitz, the Silessian farmer and father of the water cure, later introduced to Malvern.听 The Park View building in the town was once called Priessnitz House in his honour)
  • Black Pear - the ancient symbol of Worcestershire.
  • Black Country Wobble
  • Mr Phoebus (named after Elgar's bicycle.)
  • Dr Gully's Winter Ale.

Many of Julian's brews have won awards at beer festival - notably Black Pear.

If you want to contact the brewery the number is 01684 560165.
