The man responsible for creating all the lighting effects is Mark Henderson, an award winning lighting designer from Chalford, Stroud.

"I originally used to help out at school and that's where it all kicked off" says Mark.

"I used to go down to the local theatre and instead of doing my homework I'd help with the technical side of it there.

"It's just developed from there really. I went straight from school into a job and it has carried on.

Achievements

  • Mark has lit more than 50 West End productions, incl. West Side Story, Grease, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Carmen Jones.
  • Has won the Olivier Award for Best Lighting Design four times and the Tony Award for Best Lighting once.
  • Has worked as Lighting Consultant with the Almeida Theatre, the ENO, the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Old Vic and the Donmar.
  • Has also lit productions such as The History Boys, Hamlet, A Little Night Music and Anthony and Cleopatra.

Design

"My first ever proper design was at the Royal Exchange in Manchester, a play called 'Lady from the Sea' which had Vanessa Redgrave in it.

"Somebody took a chance and gave me that job and that was the first real serious piece of design."

Talking to Steve Kitchen on the 91热爆 Radio Gloucestershire lunchtime show, Mark explained that the job is far from simple.

"Every show is different and so it's always a fantastic challenge and that sort of keeps you going.

"Every set is different, all the situations are completely different, different personnel, different telling of the story and so you're constantly challenged."

Unique

Born in Mansfield, Mark moved to Gloucestershire almost ten years ago but even with his love of the county, his job often requires his attention elsewhere.

"Probably 70% of it is in London but it depends where the show originates. If you're mounting a tour it can be anywhere in the country or anywhere in the world."

Peter Pan at Kensington Gardens will not only include live theatre but also a 360-degree projected scenic design (CGI) - the first production of its kind.听

"The audience sit pretty much all the around the circular stage," says Mark.

"The scenery is a little unique because it's projected on the sloped ceiling of the tent from the front of the stage, shooting past the audiences heads.

"There was a separate video designer for that who is mainly a scenic designer but the lighting has to echo what the projection is doing so we worked together on it."
