Apne (2007)
12aContains moderate sports violence

Apne is a family affair, with Dharmendra and sons Sunny and Bobby together on screen for the first time. An emotional family drama centred around the world of boxing, the film packs a punch on all fronts. The strong narrative is supported by deftly etched characters, and the Deol clan each offer evocative performances with Dharmendra demonstrating why he's the daddy of them all.

A contender for the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship, Baldev Chaudhary (Dharmendra) is falsely charged with using dope and banned from boxing. Embittered by the humiliation, he invests his hopes in his son Angad (Sunny) to follow in his footsteps and reclaim the title and his honour. However, Angad's refusal to follow his father into boxing leaves a chasm between the two. After recovering from a childhood injury, Baldev's younger son Karan (Bobby Deol), tries to fulfill his father's dream, but ultimately, it is Angad who must fight in his father's name.

"THE FIGHT SEQUENCES ARE ENGAGING"

Apne achieves the rare feat of weaving a convincing family drama around the boxing world. While boxing might not be your thing, the fight sequences are engaging and the story is strong enough to draw you in. Dharmendra is outstanding as Baldev, capturing the conflicting emotions of an embittered man in his senior years, while sunny Deol comes to the fore in some heart-wrenching sequences with his father. Meanwhile, stirring cinematography and expertly cut flashback sequences render Apne all the more impressive.

In Hindi with English subtitles.

Apne is released in the UK on 29th June 2007.
