If they gave out awards for the year's most self-defeating title, Are We Done Yet? would be hard to beat. A wholly unncessary sequel to 2005's Are We There Yet? spliced with Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House, Steve Carr's so-called comedy sees Ice Cube's reluctant family man swap the big city for a sprawling crib in the 'burbs. No sooner has he moved in, though, than his new home starts falling apart - a telling metaphor if ever there was one.
With a new wife (Nia Long), her kids in the next room (Aleisha Allen and Philip Daniel Bolden) and twins on the way, there's never been a better time for sports shop owner turned magazine editor Nick Persons (Cube) to exchange his cramped condo for a "fixer-upper" in the sticks. But he hasn't reckoned on dry rot, corroded pipes and a raccoon infestation, let alone a hands-on builder (Scrubs' John C McGinley), so into his work he takes up residence in Nick's front yard.
"JOHN C MCGINLEY STEALS EVERY SCENE"
McGinley, as it happens, is the film's only trump card, his madcap multi-tasker (he's also a midwife, an estate agent, an ex-Olympic athlete and a Polynesian fire-dancer) stealing every scene he's in and leaving the movie's nominal star for dead. Then again, with little to do except get electrocuted and fall through floorboards, one could forgive the former rapper if his mind was elsewhere. Indeed, the only time he looks as if he's even half enjoying himself is when he's tucking into a gigantic sandwich.
Are We Done Yet? is released in UK cinemas on Friday 8th June 2007.
