Bobby (2007)
15Contains strong language, drug use and violence

Actor-turned-filmmaker Emilio Estevez pens a love letter to Robert F Kennedy, or more specifically, to an ideal image of the assassinated presidential candidate. Bobby presents a blinkered look at the man and what he meant to Americans in the turbulent 60s, but nobody can accuse Estevez of lacking sincerity. Christian Slater and Freddy Rodr铆guez are among the ensemble cast whose performances are just as heartfelt and help to compensate for some of the film's deeper flaws.

Slater plays a bigoted manager working at the hotel where Kennedy will deliver his final address before being gunned down. Rodr铆guez is the Mexican waiter who would rather be watching baseball. But in the hours leading up to the assassination, they're forced to reassess their priorities. Laurence Fishburne's philosophising chef on the other hand, is an example of where Estevez gets heavy-handed, feeding characters preachy dialogue about civil rights.

"PACKS A PUNCH"

Demi Moore, while convincing as a soused-up lounge singer, distracts from tensions elsewhere in the hotel. Basically, a fictional character given such a high profile sparks unease in the context of a momentous real-life event. Smaller subplots like Lindsay Lohan getting hitched to save her groom from the draft to Vietnam, or a story of romance gone wrong involving Sharon Stone and William H Macy are more engaging. They also resonate more credibly with the political climate, showing cautious optimism in the face of rampant cynicism. Ultimately, however, it's archive footage of Kennedy and the echo of his words that pack the biggest punch. This film won't change the world, but the sentiment should be appreciated.

Bobby is released in UK cinemas on Friday 26th January 2007.
