Shaadi Kar Ke Phas Gaya Yaar - Trapped In A Marriage (2006)
PGContains mild language and violence

Shaadi Kar Ke Phas Gaya Yaar bemoans the "inevitable" strife that comes with getting a wife. Shilpa Shetty plays the tempestuous spouse, in need of taming by her home-loving husband Salman Khan. With clich茅-ridden melodrama, questionable humour, fantasy-based song and dance numbers, and a courtroom confrontation, the film encapsulates the essence of old Bollywood. Unfortunately, it also boasts a weak premise, and outmoded ideas about women that border on the offensive. This is for die-hard Khan fans only.

When car mechanic Aayan (Salman Khan) marries the very modern Ahana (Shilpa Shetty) his hopes of a contented domestic life with all his family in tow are shattered. Separated by social class and conflicting east-west values, marital discord ensues and love turns quickly to hate. However, when fate intervenes, Aayan comes up with an unlikely arrangement that might yet save his failing marriage.

"ENCAPSULATES 'OLD' BOLLYWOOD"

Khan manages at once to bring both comedy and melodrama to the proceedings, and while it's good to see him return to form, the conclusion of the story ultimately renders his character dislikeable. It's disconcerting how the notion of a man knocking sense into a wayward wife with a necessary "thapar" or two is perceived as acceptable and even humorous.

Shaadi Kar Ke Phas Gaya Yaar attempts to be all things and winds up being very little. This is throwaway stuff, made worse by the fact that it propagates archaic views about women, leaving a bad taste in the mouth. With its didacticism and inane contrivances, it's a throwback to the worst of 80s Bollywood. Thankfully, Indian cinema has come a long way since.
