Ju-On: The Grudge 2 (2006)
15Contains strong supernatural horror and threat

Not to be confused with the forthcoming Sarah Michelle Gellar sequel (see The Grudge), Ju-On: The Grudge 2 is the follow-up to the 2003 Japanese original. Mind you, bar Buffy, what's the difference? All Grudge films follow the same drill: a string of scare scenes in search of a plot, involving cursed houses, spider women and that little blue kid who's forever popping out of nowhere. There's plenty here we've seen before, but enough fiendish invention for you to ignore the sense-impaired story.

For the record, our protagonist is veteran scream queen Kyoko (Noriko Sakai), who's pregnant by boyfriend Masashi (Ayumu Saito). Putting the acting career on hold, she signs up as a guest on a reality show filmed in the home where family woman Kayako (Takako Fuji) was murdered years earlier.

Unfortunately, the victim and her moppet son Toshio (Yuya Ozeki) are still very much there in spirit, which is bad news for the show's cast and crew...

"SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE FREQUENT FRIGHTS"

Sounds straightforward on paper, but series auteur Takashi Shimizu's got no time for logic or linear order, scrambling the movie into random chapters named for different characters. So just sit back and enjoy the frequent frights, some camp, others genuinely creepy. Little Blue Kid's days as a horror icon are looking numbered (he was just as threatening in Scary Movie 4) but there's still lots of fun stuff involving photocopiers, hangings, and crawling wigs. For showstopping grossness there's a birth scene straight out of Takashi Miike, but for sheer dazzle nothing tops the schoolgirl sequence that jolts back and forth between day and nightmare.
