Love at first sight is the subject of debut director Ol Parker's Imagine Me & You, a witty and immensely enjoyable British romantic comedy which proves that there's more to the genre than Richard Curtis, actually. A host of familiar Brit actors complement Piper Perabo, Lena Heady and Matthew Goode in this head-turning charmer. If you see only one movie this year about a bride falling for her florist during her wedding day, make sure it's this one.
The film definitely has more in common with Richard Curtis than, say, American indie lesbian comedy Kissing Jessica Stein. To its credit, though, it manages to be both a mainstream crowd-pleaser and determined to explore the consequences of love - the joy, confusion, pleasure and heartache that it can bring. Lena Headey has a natural warmth as Luce, the florist attracted to English rose Rachel (Piper Perabo, with a surprisingly credible English accent), but it's Matthew Goode's Heck who leaves a lasting impression as the sore point in the love triangle.
"LOVINGLY TOLD AND FULL OF GREAT ONE-LINERS"
Set in various photogenic parts of London, Imagine Me & You comically yet believably explores what happens when you fall for someone at the wrong place and wrong time (and let's face it, there aren't many worse times than walking down the aisle). The film's lightness of touch also ensures that the lesbian love angle never feels gimmicky, and Parker's own script is like any good wedding speech - lovingly told and full of great one-liners. Make sure you see it.
