When buddies Rahul (Tushar Kapoor) and Karan (Riteish Deshmukh) leave their middle-class families and head for the bright lights of Mumbai city, the last thing they expect is to be mistaken for a serial killer and a gay shop assistant. But that's only the beginning of their troubles in Sangeeth Sivan's strained comedy of errors, Kyaa Kool Hai Hum. Full of silly storylines and obvious sexual innuendoes, this Bollywood farce is more Carry On than cool.
Due to a series of bizarre events, simpleton Rahul is mistaken for a killer thought to be behind a spate of vicious attacks. With famous criminologist Dr Screwwalla (Anupam Kher) and macho lady Inspector Urmila Martordkar (Isha Koppikar) hot on his trail, it's surely only a matter of time before he's nabbed. But this being Bollywood, it takes another 60 scenes and three songs before our hero gets anywhere near informing his pal Karan, who's been busy using ex-girlfriend Rekha (Neha Dhupia) as a means of marrying a pretty girl with an even prettier bank balance.
"KHER AND KOPPIKAR STEAL THE SHOW"
By injecting some genuinely funny jokes and slapstick characters into a ridiculous plot, Sivan manages to create a decent entertainer. Kapoor and Deshmukh, meanwhile, make a great odd couple, but it's actually supporting actors Kher and Koppikar who steal the show with their hilarious antics as screwball criminologist and cop. It's a shame then that the superior cast are overshadowed by the film's heavy-handed use of sexual insinuations, which begin to wear thin right from the first gag. Only fans of Sid James who happen to have a healthy interest in Bollywood need apply.
