Nine years after Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy charmed moviegoers in the unaffected love story Before Sunrise, director Richard Linklater brings them together again in Before Sunset. Like the first film it is "witty, heartfelt, and true," picking up on the lives of Jesse and Celine when romance has become a faded memory. Critics adored it and those who actually paid to see it fell in love too - sadly that added up to not very much at the worldwide box office.
Before And After
To put it kindly this DVD comes with a very modest accompaniment of extras, but for a simply told story made on a low budget perhaps this is at it should be. On The Set is a cut above the usually slick, studio-produced featurette that finds cast and crew roving the streets of Paris in an effort to recapture the romance of the first movie. "It felt like something wasn't finished," explains Delpy in her attempts to rediscover Celine.
Richard Linklater was similarly compelled by the characters, remarking that, "these two just always kept on growing in my mind". And there's a hint of more to come. Ethan Hawke reveals that, even while shooting Before Sunrise, the idea was to follow the lovers across decades, through "four or five films" to create what he terms, "a giant document of love and relationships". But perhaps most intriguing of all is the way in which Linklater pooled resources with his stars to write the script - exchanging monologues and scenes through email during the course of a year.
Walking Into The Sunset
While this DVD isn't jammed with bonus features, cast and crew provide a thought-provoking look into a creative process that is rarely adopted in Hollywood - one that is truly collaborative. What's more, if you didn't catch this at the cinema, you'll be glad of a second chance with the one that got away.
