How many people does it take to hunt down a ruthless Indian Godfather with a taste for woolly winter wear and European hot spots? A whopping five, according to director Vikram Bhatt's latest crime thriller, Elaan. On a mission to revenge his father's death, businessman Karan Shah (Rahul Khanna) enlists the help of a motley crew who also harbour personal grievances against the evil Baba Sikander (Mithun Chakraborty). Before long all hell breaks loose in Mumbai, Munich and Venice in this fast-paced action movie.
Wronged ex-cop Arjun (Arjun Rampal) and jailed gang member Abhimanyu (John Abraham) are only too happy to help Karan track down the slippery Sikander. But, exactly why Priya, an annoying television reporter (Anisha Patel) and Sonia, a love struck gangster's moll (ex-Miss Universe Lara Dutta) want a piece of the action defies belief. But hey, who's complaining when the gals add to the sex appeal set by gorgeous models-turned-actors Rampal and Abraham? Just how peace-loving Karan, ditzy Priya, and Sonia manage to transform into gun-toting vigilantes is beside the point. What matters is whether the fab five will ultimately annihilate the villain.
"PREDICTABLE MATRIX-STYLE ACTION SCENES"
Sadly, the ending is as obvious as the love story sub-plots, and you never really fear the wrath of Sikander, played by 80s Bollywood disco king Chakraborty (India's answer to John Travolta post his Saturday Night Fever heyday). Even Bhatt's execution of Matrix-style action scenes and overuse of hapless goons is predictable. What could have been a stylish vendetta flick turns out to be 'time pass' - Indian slang for average.
