If you should see Igby Goes Down for one thing, it's surely for the transformation of Kieran Culkin into a Holden Caulfield-styled character that's far removed from his former child roles. An indie hit earlier this year, you can find further insight into this "caustically entertaining" movie here.
Inoffensively Bland
First, however, you have to get through some features that are distinctly average. The audio commentary between director Burr Steers and Kieran Culkin is a perfect example of an inoffensively bland chat that, while revealing some mildly interesting anecdotes, doesn't add much more depth to the film.
The same can be said for a making of featurette that sees the cast chatting about their characters. Normally this is deadly dull material, but, thanks to the charm of stars like Jeff Goldblum and Ryan Phillippe, it's just about bearable here.
Painful Deletions
Best to skip the fluff and head for the deleted scenes section, which holds plenty of material that Steers reveals was painful to cut. The reason for this was the low budget and the fact that they had to guess the cuts the MPAA would want as they couldn't afford to re-cut. Steers doesn't mention, though, if he would have liked to re-edit the movie for DVD release. His opinions on that would have offered an added insight into how he views the final product.
