Adam Sandler once again takes up the mantle of top-grossing doofus in this remake of Frank Capra's "Mr Deeds Goes to Town", a film that gets frequent mentions on this DVD.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture There's no chance of missing a moment of Adam Sandler with a transfer as sharp as this.
Sound The 5.1 sound mix spends a lot of its time consumed by a relentlessly soppy music score, but is otherwise on hand to accentuate any comic effects on offer.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Audio Commentary Director Steven Brill and writer Tim Herlihy get together for a commentary that's part poor man's stand-up and part informative breakdown on how they remade the 1936 Gary Cooper original.
Amongst quite dull writing detail comes the revelation of an unfilmed alternate opening, where OJ Simpson would introduce the character of Preston Blake (played by Harve Presnell) at a dinner, only for Blake to die of a heart attack. Weirdly, Steve and Tim still find this option very funny. Less weird is the fact that the studio said no way to it ever happening.
From Mandrake Falls to Manhattan This 18-minute featurette charts the genesis of the film, from Adam Sandler becoming involved to please his Gran, right through to the making of the comedy.
Fans of the original film may want to check out footage comparisons between the 1936 movie and the new production, which are used to illustrate the differences between the two.
Spare no Expense The film's lavish sets are shown off by art director Steve McCabe, in this six-minute featurette.
Clothes Make the Man It's the turn of costume designer Ellen Lutter to show off her work on "Mr Deeds". She tried to create costumes that echoed those of the original film.
Additional Extra Features Also on the DVD is a trailer gallery, music video, cast and crew filmographies, and a vaguely amusing outtakes reel.
DVD ROM Features Insert the disc into the DVD ROM drive of your PC and you'll get access to a complete film to script comparison, weblinks, and Deeds greeting cards which you can send online to your friends.
