Janet Jackson's acting debut was in John Singleton's second film, "Poetic Justice". The movie received mixed reviews, especially after Singleton's stunning debut with "Boyz N the Hood". The director's thoughts on that turmoil-filled period of his life are on a DVD that's a useful piece in the jigsaw of his career.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture Strong in colour and free of grain, this picture transfer is good.
Sound The 2.0 surround sound mix is fine, but lacks the bass support the music score could benefit from.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Audio Commentary Just like the DVD for John Singleton's "Higher Learning", the only real extra feature is a commentary from the man himself. What makes both discs worth owning (if you're a fan of his work) is that all these years after making the films, John is sitting down and offering his thoughts on a tumultuous period in his life.
He was only 24 when he made "Poetic Justice", had just been nominated for two Academy Awards, and was, by his standards, a rich man. His reaction to that was to try and make another film about life in South Central LA that was different from "Boyz N the Hood". The difficulties of falling in love in this combustible environment is the theme, and he wrote the script with Janet Jackson in mind.
Singleton is honest, and retains genuine excitement when speaking about how his career has progressed so far. That enthusiasm shines through in this commentary.
Additional Extra Features Also on the DVD are cast and crew filmographies, and a small trailer gallery.
