The Muppets take on another literary classic, this time Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island", and give it a fine twist of fun. If your video copy is worn out, then this DVD should make you happy with its improved picture and sound.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture A clear, bright picture showcases the Muppet mayhem to great effect and is transferred from a print that seems to be in better shape than the one used for, "The Muppet Christmas Carol" DVD.
Sound Although not very dynamic, the new 5.1 sound mix battens down a fair amount of bass to enhance the seafaring adventures of Kermit and co.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Audio Commentary It's not often you get an audio commentary with the calibre of speakers like director Brian Henson plus Gonzo and Rizzo. The latter two practice their stand-up routines every now and again while Brian discusses the technical complexities of making a Muppet movie. Complex shots, set secrets, and the story behind the first aborted script are covered.
Every now and again Gonzo and Rizzo will pull you out of the film to watch one of a number of short featurettes. These include a look at the dangers of falling into a Muppet hole, a pirate shoot in a parking lot, model work, music scoring, and more.
The Tale of the Story Behind the Tail This 20-minute look behind the scenes takes on the same format as the featurette you'll find on "The Muppet Christmas Carol" DVD. The thing about that disc is that although structured the same, it's more entertaining than this "Treasure Island" effort.
A lot of the interview footage is promotional material made for the 1996 release of the film. But the behind-the-scenes footage is of interest. Amongst the technical information, Gonzo and Rizzo cut in with more comedy japes: the trouble is they're just not very funny. Better writing was needed for their moments.
Treasure Sing Along Join in to the songs in the movie.
