Medieval jousting gets a rock makeover in the rousing "A Knight's Tale", which now comes on a DVD laden with extra features.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
Picture You can bet that medieval times never looked as good as the picture quality on this disc.
Sound It's hard for a smile not to creep on your face as Queen's "We Will Rock You" stomps into your living room, courtesy of a 5.1 mix that revels in bass-enhanced surround effects.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Audio Commentary One Producer, writer, director, and all-round wunderkid Brian Helgeland teams up with actor Paul Bettany for an easy-going commentary. It's pleasant enough to listen to, and they reveal the shot of Paul's buttocks was probably the first time an American audience has ever seen him. Those of you wondering what the songs are on the busy soundtrack will want to tune in, as Brian lists 'em all. He also drops in some detail about the historical changes made for the purpose of the movie.
Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes There are no fewer than 11 of these featurettes, which could really have been amalgamated into one documentary, properly chaptered along the lines of "The Matrix Revisited" DVD. Moans aside, here's a brief rundown of what you get:
The Rock Music Scene in 1370 Helgeland writes his scripts to music and whatever he happens to be listening to, tends to wind-up influencing the film.
Sexy Armour and a Rock Band on Tour An overview of the costumes in the film that apparently were inspired by the 1972 Rolling Stones tour.
You Never Know What You'll Find in a Czech Prop House Catchy titles these featurettes have, huh? This is one of the better ones as we find out the weird stuff you do indeed find in a Czech prop house (think dead animals, lots of), admire their carpentry skills, and giggle at the extras trying to learn how to Mexican wave.
School of Hard Knocks A look here at the work of the second unit and just how scary it is trying to film joust scenes, after deciding that the only way to do them convincingly is to do 'em for real.
Tournaments: A Cross Between Pro Football and Stock Car Racing Here's a little history of the jousting tournaments that toured Europe. It's actually quite interesting.
The Marquee Event A handy little guide as to the points scoring system used in jousting.
The World's First Sports Promoter Apparently that would be Geoffrey Chaucer, who was racier than most of our school educations might have suggested.
Stories for the People More 'evidence' to back-up this new-look image of Geoffrey 'wildcard' Chaucer.
The Rules of Love You think dating is complicated now? Boy, was it difficult in the old days. That said, all your communication went through a middleman, a tradition still to be found in nightclubs today along the lines of, "Will you snog ma mate?"
Heath Ledger Profile Come on, this guy's a god already! What does he need a profile for? Ladies, you want affirmation of just how incredible this guy is, it's all here. Trouble is, he comes across as a good bloke.
A Director's Quest Another profile, this time of Helgeland, as cast and crew pay tribute to the man.
Deleted Scenes Six scenes, some quite good, all with intros.
HBO Making of Once you've got to this mini documentary, most of it seems like a recap of all that has gone before. There is though even more behind-the-scenes footage, and a look at initial rehearsals.
Additional Extra Features Robbie Williams and Queen music video, trailers, and cast and crew filmographies.
