Every moment spent with the "Some Like it Hot" special edition DVD is a good one. From the treatment of the film to the quality of the extra features, this is an essential disc to own.
The transfer of the movie to DVD is excellent, with a clean, strong contrast black and white picture on offer. Time and trouble has been taken with the new 5.1 sound mix which uses all available speakers to great effect during the musical routines, and offers a good deal of rear speaker atmospherics during other scenes.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Nostalgic Look Back -
Tony Curtis is a man with a legendary social life, but in this new 30-minute interview with Leonard Maltin, he's humble and keen to promote the work that others put into the film rather than talking about himself. A large portion of the chat is devoted to Marilyn Monroe, and Curtis talks with remarkable frankness about her - denying ever saying that kissing her "was like kissing Hitler". Sadly he also reveals that Monroe seemed to derive no pleasure from making such a good movie. Her tragic personal life took a heavy toll on her, and Billy Wilder simply had to capture the best takes he could, as fast as possible. For the price of the DVD, this interview is well worth seeing.
Memories from the Sweet Sues -
Four of the girls from the movie's band, Sweet Sue and her High Society Syncopaters, look back on the film in this new interview. Again there's much to learn about Monroe that seems desperately sad, including how she had to sometimes be tricked out of her trailer to come on set. That said, all have clear admiration and affection for the tortured star.
Virtual Hall of Memories -
The above two interviews feature behind-the-scenes footage and stills, but there's more to be found in this superb gallery of memories that's divided up between the principal actors and director Billy Wilder.
Press Book Gallery -
View the original press book for the film with the ability to enlarge sections to read.
