Eyes Wide Shut DVD (1999)

Stanley Kubrick's last film, "Eyes Wide Shut", is so dominated by imagery that a quality transfer to DVD is nothing short of essential. This disc doesn't disappoint with the mainly blue and red colour scheme of the movie strong and clean, while never losing that all-important glow. The flesh tones are good too and that's an important consideration for a movie that doesn't shy away from nudity.

The many street scenes are full of atmospheric noise, but the soundtrack really comes to life during Cruise's visit to the unforgettable party. Weird and unsettling music dominates the front speakers while the surrounds fill with sinister whispering murmurs and echoes.

The DVD contains interviews with Cruise, Kidman, and long-time friend of Kubrick's, Steven Spielberg. All speak very highly of the man, and both Tom and Nicole arevisibly upset discussing his death. Kidman gives the greatest insight into the making of the film, describing Kubrick as very controlling but also pointing out the freedom he gave for input.
