听 As daughter Patricia reveals on this fine new DVD release, "Shadow of a Doubt" was Alfred Hitchcock's favourite of his own films.
Picture quality is excellent, especially considering that this is a movie from 1943. There are, of course, some scratches to the print, but it's minor stuff and the black and white image is clear and detailed.
The 2.0 mono track does the job of conveying the dialogue without too much background noise on what is a reasonably strong sound mix.
Universal has gone down the same road as MGM with their Bond DVDs in commissioning brand new documentaries for each film that in this case make up the Hitchcock Collection. The quality of the contributors is excellent. Patricia Hitchcock provides an overview of the production, which included such talents as Thornton Wilder, while actors Teresa Wright and Hume Cronyn both relate fond and amusing anecdotes.
Robert Boyle's superb storyboard work is available for you to examine, as well as a huge selection of stills, posters, lobby cards, and more in two interactive galleries included on the DVD. Available to buy on its own or as part of the seven-disc Hitchcock Collection, this is a fitting DVD release for such a clever and suspenseful drama.
