Mermaids DVD (1990)

Cher deeply embarrasses her teenage daughter (Winona Ryder) in this slightly soppy but often amusing comedy drama. Boasting good performances all round, it's a film that some of you might like to have on the shelf for a Sunday afternoon. For that, it's well worth considering the DVD release.

This is a film that's memorable for its gorgeous New England locations, especially as we get to see them in the fall. Beautiful autumnal shades dominate the picture, and the DVD transfer really showcases them well.

The 2.0 surround mix concentrates on splitting Jack Nitsche's score around the speakers, with most of the effects sticking to the centre.

With only a trailer on offer, this is not a disc to buy for the extra features. The quality of the transfer though is excellent and it should help you wallow even more into the drama.
