"Miracles" marked a decisive change in style for Jackie Chan, as he took this opportunity to direct an opulent and polished period action-comedy-drama. It comes on a showcase DVD, which includes a very interesting interview with the man himself.
The quality cinematography and elegant camera-work is allowed to show off, courtesy of a superb transfer that's sharp and rich with colour.
The 5.1 sound mix complements the period feel well, with subtle atmospherics filling the surrounds, especially during the harbour scenes.
Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan provides another of his always entertaining and fact-stuffed audio commentaries. He covers every angle of the production, and also compares moments in the film to the Frank Capra movie "Pocketful of Miracles", upon which "Miracles" is based.
The interview with Jackie Chan is very revealing as he discusses directing what has become his favourite movie. He's surprised that most US directors are not able to edit, and talks at length of his love of the skill. He's particularly scathing of the trend in US action movies for outlandish camera movements, as he believes that it's only done to cover up the fact that the US stars aren't capable of performing stunts properly. He believes that the CGI effects are obviously fake, and that audiences deserve to see stunts that are real.
A quality DVD release.
