City Hunter DVD (1992)

Jackie Chan's most frenetic film, "City Hunter", spills onto a DVD that's loaded with features galore.

The VHS release of this film suffered from a washed-out look that is still evident on this DVD. That said, it's a big improvement and the "Die Hard"-style escapades look good.

Remastered into 5.1, this is a mix that concentrates on separating the music score around the speakers. Effects stay in the centre speaker with kicks and punches receiving extra bass from the sub-woofer, although oddly, this is not the case with explosions.

Where this DVD really pleases is in the quality of the extra features. Jackie Chan contributes a short interview where he discusses his reasons for making the film and comments on the prowess of seasoned Australian martial artist Richard Norton, who plays his nemesis in the film.

Norton is also on the disc, and goes into some detail over the climactic six-minute fight scene between him and Chan that took six weeks to film. Gary Daniels confirms such stories of Chan's need for perfection in a 30-minute interview (which includes behind-the-scenes footage), where he also takes us through his own career progression. Any aspiring Kung Fu stars will be interested to hear what this successful British star has to say.

As with most of the other Hong Kong Legends releases, you'll also find trailers, animated biographies, and a stills gallery all wrapped-up in funky animated menus. Watch out too for a four-minute montage of out-takes.
