"Cliffhanger" was a tremendous return to form for Stallone, and is arguably his best action film of the 90s. It was a movie that impressed then and pleasingly does so all over again courtesy of a superb disc.
The icy blues, greys, and whites of the Italian Alps settings dazzle in a spectacular transfer to DVD. There's a biting freshness to the movie that, along with the quality cinematography and letterbox ratio, beautifully captures the scale of this adventure.
Previous video releases of "Cliffhanger" were a real bore in terms of sound quality. The Dolby Surround track always seemed very uninspiring given the rock-jumping antics on screen. The 5.1 sound mix for DVD is a totally different story and really adds extra thrills.
In terms of extra features you get a teaser and 'that trailer' which started the trend for setting action trailers to rousing classical scores. Trailers seem to divide people like brussel sprouts - either you loathe them or you love 'em. But when it came to building audience anticipation for an action movie, the "Cliffhanger" trailer was one of the best.
You also get a series of interviews, behind the scenes, and 'making of' footage that, while short, remain interesting. There's the usual cheesiness given that these are made up from studio-approved PR material, but it's clear that all involved genuinely enjoyed making the movie.
The star of this disc though is the transfer of the movie. This really is an essential disc for fans of action blockbusters that really deliver those promised thrills.
