The Bond movies had used so many glamorous locations by the time they came to make "Moonraker", that space seemed like a natural progression. Outlandish in every sense, this is a film that took a lot of skill to make, and this is explored in depth on the DVD release.
The Oscar-nominated effects certainly come out looking pristine in a good transfer to disc. Some of the 'earth' scenes carry a little print damage, but most of the daytime shots look very fresh indeed.
The sound has been upgraded to a 5.1 mix that offers plenty of fun effects like a centrifuge device swooping round your speakers. And space proves to be a lot more fun on DVD, with lasers firing from all directions.
The disc offers two documentaries. The first, "Inside Moonraker" is over 40 minutes long and is thoroughly fascinating to watch. Interviews with the cast and crew take you through all the logistical problems of shooting the movie. And make sure to stick around for the credits, as various outtakes are shown that are very amusing to watch.
The feature-length commentary is well worth listening to if you want more information on the technical side of the film. And an additional "The Men Behind the Mayhem" documentary showcases the special effects guys behind the Bond series.
Also included on the disc are 14 galleries with plenty of "behind the scenes" stills.
Another fine addition to a Bond DVD collection that no fan should be without. And special mention should go to the beautifully designed animated menu.
