Adam Garcia - Coyote Ugly

Coyote Ugly

Interviewed by James Mottram

You play Kevin, the hapless boyfriend to central character Violet. What did you make of him?

He's a genuinely warm man who doesn't have a lot of time himself. He doesn't have a dream. The only dream he has is to keep his heart beating, feed himself, and read comic books. It was that reversal where the girls are the strong, dominant, confident people with high self-esteem, and Kevin is a drifter. He coasts. He's a cruiser. When he discovers Violet, he saw this innocent beauty that he never had. He sees something worthwhile that he wants to nurture. He's an ultimately altruistic character, and that appealed to me because I'm a complete bastard.

So what was it like being surrounded by all those women?

I'm a dancer, and have been dancing since I was seven, so quite often I'd be the only guy with a bunch of girls. I'm used to being dominated. When they were doing their performances, they were pretty wild. They were in control.

Did you enjoy the strip-tease you're made to perform?

I felt like a woman. I felt like one of the girls. It was kind of daunting because they got to be really dominant. I was just Mr Stripper-Boy, which takes a certain element of pride and humility away. But it was good fun - I got to rub my nipples.

What are you up to next?

I'm about to start shooting Penny Marshall's "Riding In Cars With Boys" with Drew Barrymore. It's about a woman's life and the drama involved with her trying to deal with who she is.
