听 It's been four years since the terrifying shark attacks in Amity and police chief Roy Scheider has settled down to a career of dealing with mundane small-town problems. But, when he begins to suspect that there's another Great White in town, he faces a wall of local disbelief in this mildly effective sequel.
This shark clearly favours its meat a little more tender, as it opts for some of the teen talent bathing in Amity. With a mysterious death at sea, Scheider begins to suspect the worst and when he dramatically clears the beach in a tense sequence he finds himself fired. The locals refuse to believe that there's another shark in the water, so pitting Scheider not only against a shark but the doomed community too.
Director Jeannot Szwarc adopts a similar filming style to Spielberg, but is unable to generate the same level of tension as in the first film. This new shark gets far more screen time than its predecessor and, as a result, seems far less terrifying than its almost mystical contemporary.
The disposal of the various victims is the main twist for this film. Seemingly, a collision with this shark seems to cause boats to explode, and the arrival of a helicopter is no match for the toothed wonder, who also takes time out to kill one hapless teen by smacking him into a small boat at high speed.
Unfortunately, these new ingredients don't help dispel the feeling that this is a movie of warmed-up leftovers. The irritating and incessantly screaming teenagers don't make for very sympathetic victims either.
