Tracker
The team were able to track Danny because he was carrying a
tracking device. These devices are able to pinpoint their location
with the aid of satellite navigation. Ìý
The Global Positioning System is a group of 27 satellites encircling
the earth. They were originally launched by the American military
as a navigation system, but before long the system was opened
up for everyone’s use. Ìý
At any point on earth the receiver will always be able to communicate
with at least four satellites. It needs these four satellites
to help it judge its position. The receiver calculates the distance
between it and each of the satellites, then it’s able
to pinpoint a position where all those distances meet at one
point. By a process of elimination, that must be the location
of the receiver. Ìý
In a standard GPS receiver that you might buy in a shop the
location information would be displayed on the receiver. In
a tracking device the receiver transmits the data to a third
party computer which is where location can be pinpointed with
the aid of maps. As well as being used to keep track of a spook,
these devices can be fitted to vehicles or other goods, so that
if they are stolen, they can be located quickly and easily.

Creating a Legend In spying terms a cover is a used to conceal a spy’s
true identity. It can be as simple as just the use of a fake
name. A legend is the term for a very sophisticated cover. It
is basically means creating an entire false life, including
past events. ÌýÌý Ìý
Maxi had an incredibly complicated legend. She’d stolen
the identity of a baby that had been born in Surrey in the late
70s. That birth certificate had been used to get her a passport,
and she arrived in the country and started at a boarding school
in 1990. Ìý
A spy has to completely live their legend. They must be sure
not to carry anything that would point to their true identity.
A well-prepared legend not only provides the documents that
he needs to pass himself off as his new identity, but also the
paperwork you might expect to be generated by any ordinary person’s
life. They must have the ticket stubs, receipts, certificates,
letters, postcards etc which would feature in any person’s
life. Ìý
The slightest error in a legend can be the thing that gives
a spy away. |
