Is There A Fox In Your Garden?

Is there a fox in your garden? Ever spotted rabbits while out on a walk? Record your sightings and help the wildlife in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire is teeming with wildlife, whether it's Derby City Centre, a local park or country hedgerow. You might even be lucky enough to spot a fox in your garden.

Keeping your eyes open for mammals and recording what you see is all you need to do to help an important local project. The idea is to gather records of mammals across the county and use the results to produce an 'atlas' of mammals in Derbyshire.

The results will be made public in 2010.

It's an excellent way to find out more about the animals in your local area as well as help experts keep an eye on what's thriving and what's not.

All you have to do is click on the link below and download one of the special mammal recording forms, fill it in with a grid reference and send it back. The project is being organised by the Derbyshire Mammal Group.

What Could You Spot?

There are all sorts of mammals to be spotted locally. Over 30 species have been spotted at Carsington Water alone! If you're eagle eyed you could spot a pygmy shrew or a harvest mouse, which is only 5cm long. Bats, stoats, weasels, wood mice, bank voles, hedgehogs and red deer are just a few of the other animals you might spot.

Is There A Fox In Your Garden?

The people involved are especially keen to hear about foxes, especially if they've been spotted in urban areas. Although they adapt well to living in towns and cities there's very little information on exactly where they are locally. Maybe you've got one living near you?

How do I take part?

Easy. Visit the Derbyshire Mammal Group website (use the link on the right) to download a survey form. All the information you need to know is there!
