Du Maurier Festival line up revealed

Another star-studded bonanza is promised in May at the now annual Daphne Du Maurier festival.

Fans of the author travel from all over the world to attend book-related walks and talks, and celebrity performances.

FACTS

Daphne was born in 1907, grand-daughter of the brilliant artist and writer George du Maurier, daughter of Gerald, the most famous Actor Manager of his day, she came from a creative and successful family.

Daphne began writing short stories in 1928, and in 1931 her first novel, 'The Loving Spirit' was published. It received rave reviews and further books followed.

Then came her most famous three novels, 'Jamaica Inn', 'Frenchman's Creek' and Rebecca'.

Each novel being inspired by her love of Cornwall, where she lived and wrote.

The nineth annual Daphne du Maurier Festival of Arts & Literature, organised and promoted by Restormel Borough Council, will take place between Friday 6th and Sunday 15th May in Fowey, and its neighbouring towns and villages.

This year's line up is another fascinating mix of star names and local events.

Paul Carrack
Paul Carrack

Topping the bill is Paul Carrack and his band. Paul is the lead singer of the massively successful for Mike and the Mechanics (formed by Mike Rutherford of Genesis) and has provided the lead vocals for the group's multi-million selling singles Silent Running and The Living Years.

Other music at this year's Festival includes Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames, folk from Kate Rusby, the Jazz world's sensation Clare Teal and Rock'n' Roll from Showaddywaddy, supported by Cornwall's own Al Hodge.

Paul Merton

Top class comedy is to be provided by Paul Merton and his Impro Chums and Julian Clary, with his stage show, Natural Born Mincer. Roy Hudd makes a welcome return to Fowey with his new one-man show.

Last year's hit show was the comedy team of Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, performing Withering Looks. The duo return this year and turn their attentions on the mysterious world of Sherlock Holmes in their show Move Over Moriarty!

Other star names lined-up to appear are Kate Adie, Mo Mowlam, Joan Bakewell, John Burton Race, Sir Clement Freud, The Barefoot Doctor, Sir Donald Sinden, Bob Flowerdew, Nigel Rees, antiques expert Eric Knowles and stars from one of television's most popular ever dramas, Upstairs Downstairs.

The writers Max Arthur, Michael Crick, Bryan Appleyard, Lucinda Hawkesley, Nicci Gerrard, Jessica Mann, Simon Garfield, Katie Fforde, Sally Beauman, Anthony Holden and Freda Lightfoot will all be at the Festival discussing their latest books.

Local participants include Joan Coombs, who will be giving a talk on Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch; D M Thomas, Victoria Field and Bill Mycock, the first three writers to be published by Cornwall's newest literary press, Fal Publications and the explorer/artist Tony Foster, who will have just returned from painting Everest.

In addition, the Festival will enjoy the best of local drama, art and flower exhibitions, guided walks and free entertainment on Fowey's Town Quay.
