Gig rowing in Newquay

Newquay Championships

The gig rowing season continued with the Newquay Championships. The weather wasn't kind on the Saturday 6 September, however it picked up nicely on the Sunday, although the waves tested the abilities of even the most experienced gig rowers.

In the Ladies County Gig Rowing Championships Falmouth's Ladies A took first place.

There was just one round of rowing on Saturday as bad weather reports forced organisers to postpone racing until Sunday morning.

Four races later and Falmouth A took the trophy, followed closely by Caradon, Charlestown, Newquay and Mounts bay.

It's estimated that more than 600 rowers took part in the event.

Newquay Rowing Club was formed in 1921 with the first rowing season in 1922.

The club started with the three old gigs, Newquay (built in 1812), Dove (1820) and Treffry (1838).

Apart from the Isles of Scilly, Newquay was the last port in Cornwall to have pilot gigs.

Gig racing was a long established sport in Newquay before 1922.

The Newquay Championships are one of the last gig rowing events of the season.
