Nature FeaturesYou are in: Cornwall > Nature > Nature Features > Giant Sightings Giant SightingsToward the end of May, Orca Sea Safari passengers were lucky enough to get, not only a glimpse of the world's second-largest fish, but fantastically intimate sightings of Basking Sharks during their day trip around the coast of Cornwall. This majestic creature is the largest wild animal regularly found in Britain's waters. Recent reports suggest that the basking shark, may be moving north - possibly as a result of climate change. Sightings of Basking Sharks Sightings of the sharks have increased by 65% in Scottish waters over the last four years, and in south west England, traditionally the UK hotspot of basking shark activity, sightings have dropped by a massive 66%. On this occasion though, the gentle giants were out in force. Four sharks were spotted feeding on the surface on the water between Portloe and Portholland approximately 250m offshore, with the first one being a 16 foot basking shark. See photos of the Basking Sharks from the Orca Sea Safari trip: A smaller juvenile Basking Shark was then spotted 300m off Porthbear beach with a much larger 30 foot Shark 350-400m off Porthbear. Another Basking shark was also spotted in the distance off Nare head. A further 7 Basking sharks were then spotted between Porthbeor beach and Nare Head, with others observed further in the distance. Getting close-up to the gentle giants Saturday 31st brought another 8 Basking sharks, again between Porthbeor and Nare head. These sharks were mainly observed in pairs. As well as the Basking sharks, there were two separate sightings of Porpoises in Gerrans Bay and Bottlenose dolphins.
