Explorer Launches Programme

Local kayak explorer Jeff Allen will launch the new marine school lecture programme at The National Maritime Museum in Falmouth.

Jeff was part of the first British team to circumnavigate the remote Antarctic Island of South Georgia, long considered by sea kayakers around the globe as being the K2 of kayaking.

On Thursday 10 January at 2pm he will be discussing the kayak as a vehicle to explore many areas of the globe and environments often considered to be totally inappropriate to other water craft.

This is the first of a new series of monthly talks and Q&A sessions by leading experts, at the Maritime Museum in Falmouth.

Open to students and anyone keen to learn more about these important subjects, the series of hour-long talks will address the latest, most topical developments in a range of specialist marine subjects.

These will include recent discoveries in marine biology, the pressing environmental issues facing Cornwall, the future of boat design & technology, the use of sport science and managing the impact of leisure and tourism.

The programme is scheduled to run annually, between January and June, on the first Thursday of the month.

Following Jeff鈥檚 talk in January, Colin Speedie of the WiSe Scheme will be exploring ways by which we can minimise the disturbance of marine wildlife, whilst allowing the development of a fast growing ecotourism opportunity, on Thursday 7 February.

Steve Bowens, Curriculum Area Manager for Leisure & Watersports at Falmouth Marine School, says: "Falmouth Marine School and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall are both in the business of educating people about all aspects of the marine environment, whether it be for work, play or academic investigation.

"I am very excited by this opportunity of joining our forces to share knowledge and experiences with students and local people. We are situated right in the heart of a fantastic marine environment and sounded by some exceptional experts, so why not get them all together in the Maritime Museum鈥檚 inspiring building and location."

The Lecture with Jeff Allen will be held at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth On Thursday 10 January at 2pm. It is open to anyone and free to Museum ticket holders. For more information contact the museum.
