Women of the Sea

A variety of women from the South West are making their mark at sea - in professions normally associated with men. Read their stories in this special series of articles by 91热爆 News Online.

From fishing on trawlers to surfing the waves in their 60s, South West women have strong links to the sea.

The 91热爆 has compiled stories from six women on how the ocean around them affects their lives professionally and emotionally.

They include harrowing tales of crossing the Atlantic solo, to helping save lives and protecting sea life.

For some women it means being part of a male-dominated environment, either as a top surfing photographer or going aboard foreign ships as a counsellor for sailors.

Together their tales show women are at home at sea.

Louise Carter

Apostle of the Sea

The woman who counsels sailors when they come into port. Louise Carter is accustomed to hearing about the trials of life at sea.

Surf photographer

The 25-year-old who broke into a male-dominated world. Lucia Griggi is the only female photographer in the UK whose work regularly appears in top surf magazines.

Wave of emotion
